Game of Thrones 1.02: Viewer Outrage: I should read comments more often.

SPOILERS ZOMG! But it's not a huge one.

According to EW, Game of Thrones Episode 2 is pissing people off because...

SPOILERS AGAIN. Just to be safe.

A direwolf was killed. Yes, that's right. Game of Thrones, a story about sex, murder, crime, and incest...is causing a ruckus because a direwolf was killed off. In a TV show.

The article recaps comments made on the EW recap of 1.02, Kingsroad:

“My girlfriend swears she is done watching [Thrones] after what happened to___,” wrote one viewer on EW’s recap. “[They can] sleep with as many people as they want, but don’t kill ____. Or I’m done!” threatened another. “People on my Facebook wall are posting that they won’t watch anymore after what they did to___” wrote a third.

Unsaid name is Lady, the direwolf who was killed.
What's even more interesting, besides these people's ridiculous comments about something incredibly trivial, is everyone else's comments on the outrage article itself.
Many people are coming to the shows defense. If viewers can't handle the offscreen death of a dire wolf, how the hell did they get through the violent opening, the decapitation, Bran getting thrown out of a window, the butcher's boy being brutally killed and other disturbing scenes which include incest, sex, and violence. And, many readers can tell you now that the story will just get more violent.

But the most amusing part of this all is the comments about this topic. I love how people are so quick in arms to tell others they are stupid, and while I'm about to sarcastically do the same to a couple, I at least do it with minimal grammar and spelling errors. I think we're all entitled to our own opinions, but I don't appreciate blatant ignorance.

Oh and by the way. For those of you who don't know. Game of Thrones is a FICTIONAL TV SHOW. Just clarifying.

Some of the most interesting comments are:
PREFACE: Sarcasm from me abound!

Cleverly named "whatevs" says: "Dogs are innocent. People are not."
He then follows up with a very insightful, incredibly truthful statement...
"It’s more emotional for a lot of people because animals are mistreated exponentially more than kids are in the world. People are allowed to care about whatever makes them the most emotional."
Because you know, child slavery and cruelty don't exist.

Joe the Dirt: "Whay is everyone saying about how it gets much worse, can you see the future or something? It’s a new show, people, get over yourselves, let’s just see what happens."
I love this comment, simply because it's so misinformed. Just so you are all well-informed, Game of Thrones is the adaptation of George RR Martin's fantasy book series, A Song of Ice and Fire. And it's closely following the story. Closely. Martin is one of the executive producers and is involved with the script.

'Lish says: "AMEN! And for all you sadistic ~!@#’s that are ok with a depiction of a wolf being stabbed to death are SICK."
I don't understand this comment. I didn't see any wolf getting stabbed to death. I heard some yelping and I stared at Sean Bean's face.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. But if you're going to knock something, try to use proper English.
barock: "That crazy Spartacus thing an Starz makes this look a children’s movie.
Thrones is as stupid however."

Ed puts it nicely: "I am shocked that HBO would allow such a brutal show. I miss the days when it showed more family-friendly shows like…the Sopranos and Oz and Deadwood."
Yeah, people need to realize what they are paying for. HBO is not a free station, and thus has reign to do what it wants, including sex, violence, and animal killings. Oh, and he's being sarcastic. :)

Ruth Kanost shared: "My friend, a Harry Potter fanatic, refuses to read or watch anything in which an animal dies. Imagine his distress when he received Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and an animal died in the second chapter. It’s a tough choice to make, people."
Damn this person must not get to see much.

Joe says: "come on people…Was it really necessary to have a dog killing scene in this episode? Come on writers… people dont want to see or in this case hear a dog being put down mercifully or not to add more dramatic effect."
When people respond, saying that the death is part of the story and has importance he says:
"I disagree..for some sick reason writers get off on having to show animals being mistreated in movies nowadays when there is no reason for it."
Yeah, the writers all sit together and think, which animal shall we kill off evilly today, cackle cackle cackle.

Armsea says: "To be as brutally honest as I can. I think the reason why people are so outraged over the direwolf being killed, is solely for the reason that these characters have no redeming likeable characteristics.
Lets all face it, this show it written purely for the fanboys of the books. There is no clear narrative, and the direwolf being killed was the only real moment where there was any tension, emtional response for me, since the 1st episode."

You know, I wouldn't dismiss this as a fanboy show. You want to talk about fanboy shows, we can talk about Twilight. Far be it from me to hide behind critics, but several, who haven't read the books, are raving about this show, and I believe its because the show has stayed true to the books, and was created with true care. George RR Martin has created a complex story that takes an honest look at human nature, even though it's set in a fantasy world. This isn't no silly author's fantasy come true where she's woo'd by a hot brooding vampire and conveniently has the super power to fend off evil vampires. This is far more complex then that.

Pat says: "I don’t care about the people being killed, but don’t kill the animals, it really puts me off watching programs and films when animals are killed. If any more animals are killed in the series, unnecessarily, I won’t be watching any more, it isn’t that good up till now, so it won’t be any great sacrifice."
I wouldn't say the direwolf was killed unnecessarily. Ned didn't just run around killing animals for sport.

People who are outraged over the direwolf death are missing the point. Lady's death was unfair because she was nowhere near the crime she was executed for. Game of Thrones, and A Song of Ice and Fire are about the brutality of the world; of how evil is rampant and life is...gasp....NOT FAIR.
And what's the silliest part of it all is that Lady was not shown being slain and in real life, she is living a very nice life, for she was adopted after production by Sansa's actress.

In the end, gary says it best:
"If viewers are upset over the off-screen death of an animal and not the incest, murder, attempted murder, prostitution and cursing that has been depicted so far… stop watching, because this is the happy part."

Conclusion: I realize this is kind of mean and sarcastic. And I am being hypocritical by blasting other people's opinions, when I claim that all should have freedom to express their own opinions. But I would hope that silly nonsense such as this would not hurt a wonderful show, whose intentions are not to go around pissing off PETA. I promise they aren't.
